"Decorative art objects featuring maritime scenes were popular in 19th-century America. Although these high-style vases match a service commissioned by President Madison for the White House, they are thought to have been made for an American diplomat. The War of 1812 inspired both scenes: one the famous battle between the USS Constitution and H.M.S. Guerriere, the other an experimental steam frigate designed by Robert Fulton."
